The Pruning Grounds
The 2027 Expo is redefining what a bonsai talent competition can be.

Applications are now open for potential participants:
A three-person panel will determine which applicants can enter the participation. They'll be looking for candidates who can succeed at the event, so they'll be looking for evidence of the work the candidates can do.
Topics that may be covered in the competition include, but are not limited to:
- general horticulture
- pruning
- wiring
- styling
- conifer and deciduous basics
- deadwood design
- repotting
- display
The competition will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 6th, at the 2027 Pacific Bonsai Expo. All 16 competitors will complete the first round. After lunch, the judges will make cuts and only a select few will return for the final round.
We'll have a camera crew on hand with an eye towards sharing highlights online after the event.
